","score":0,"kind":"approval","endorsements":1,"spoiler":false},{"ref":"steam:234099572","audience":"player","origin":"steam","author":"","url":"","language":"en","publishedAt":"2026-08-30T17:55:59.000Z","title":"","text":"REAL MOON is a very different kind of game because it is not really trying to give me a normal game loop. Instead, it lets me explore a recreation of the Moon that was built using real observation data. I can walk around the surface, drive a lunar rover and take in the environment at my own pace. The whole thing feels more like an interactive space experience than a traditional game, and I think that is important to keep in mind before playing it.\nThe biggest thing I liked is how convincing the lunar surface can feel. The terrain uses high resolution elevation data, crater distribution data and rock placement based on observation and scientific research. The project was also developed through joint research between JAXA and historia. The positions of the Sun, Earth and Moon can change over time as well, which is a nice detail that makes the environment feel less like a static level.\nDriving the rover was probably the part I enjoyed the most. Walking around the surface is interesting for a while, but getting behind the rover gives me a better sense of how large and empty the environment actually is. I like being able to simply explore without enemies or a bunch of distractions getting in the way. There is something quite relaxing about travelling across the craters and rocks while knowing the terrain is based on real lunar data.\nThe main weakness is also the most obvious one. There is not much actual gameplay here. I am given a single mission and the advertised playtime is only around 15 to 30 minutes. Once I have explored the area and completed that mission, there is not a huge amount keeping me there. I think this is fine for a free experience, but I cannot judge it like a full space exploration game because it simply does not have that amount of content.\nI also think the realism makes the experience a little hit or miss depending on what I want from it. The Moon is naturally quiet, empty and repetitive, and REAL MOON does not try to hide that. For me, that is part of what makes it interesting, but I can also see myself getting bored once the novelty wears off. I would have liked a few more things to interact with, maybe more missions or some extra areas to explore, because the underlying technology deserves more opportunities to be used.\nOverall, I think REAL MOON is a really neat little experience that succeeds at showing me something rather than giving me a huge amount of traditional gameplay. The realistic terrain, changing celestial positions and rover exploration all work well together, and I like that the game is comfortable being quiet instead of forcing action into it. The short length is definitely the biggest limitation, but considering it is free, I think it is still worth spending some time with if I am interested in the Moon or realistic space simulations. It left me wanting more, which is both a weakness and probably the biggest compliment I can give it.\nRating: 7.6/10","html":"

REAL MOON is a very different kind of game because it is not really trying to give me a normal game loop. Instead, it lets me explore a recreation of the Moon that was built using real observation data. I can walk around the surface, drive a lunar rover and take in the environment at my own pace. The whole thing feels more like an interactive space experience than a traditional game, and I think that is important to keep in mind before playing it.

The biggest thing I liked is how convincing the lunar surface can feel. The terrain uses high resolution elevation data, crater distribution data and rock placement based on observation and scientific research. The project was also developed through joint research between JAXA and historia. The positions of the Sun, Earth and Moon can change over time as well, which is a nice detail that makes the environment feel less like a static level.

Driving the rover was probably the part I enjoyed the most. Walking around the surface is interesting for a while, but getting behind the rover gives me a better sense of how large and empty the environment actually is. I like being able to simply explore without enemies or a bunch of distractions getting in the way. There is something quite relaxing about travelling across the craters and rocks while knowing the terrain is based on real lunar data.

The main weakness is also the most obvious one. There is not much actual gameplay here. I am given a single mission and the advertised playtime is only around 15 to 30 minutes. Once I have explored the area and completed that mission, there is not a huge amount keeping me there. I think this is fine for a free experience, but I cannot judge it like a full space exploration game because it simply does not have that amount of content.

I also think the realism makes the experience a little hit or miss depending on what I want from it. The Moon is naturally quiet, empty and repetitive, and REAL MOON does not try to hide that. For me, that is part of what makes it interesting, but I can also see myself getting bored once the novelty wears off. I would have liked a few more things to interact with, maybe more missions or some extra areas to explore, because the underlying technology deserves more opportunities to be used.

Overall, I think REAL MOON is a really neat little experience that succeeds at showing me something rather than giving me a huge amount of traditional gameplay. It left me wanting more, which is both a weakness and probably the biggest compliment I can give it.
