versions (as well as the other games and their versions in the series) since it was released. I enjoyed the improvements it made on the combat system of the original, and the additions Dark Gaia made with the wandering enemies. The original game only had enemies appear when trying to solve (or having solved) a puzzle.\nThey also removed the healing basin that was present in every save room, which makes the playthroughs much harder, as you have to manage your supplies even more carefully than ever. Without the basin, I wasn't able to use my old tactic of bustin down doors and opening stuck drawers, and then retracing my steps to a basin to replenish my stamina to max again before tackling the next combat encounter.\nIn my opinion, nearly all the changes made to the version on Steam are welcome. Howevr, I do have two minor gripes. The original game was much darker (not in tone but lighting) than this version, and the abiltiies of the characters were alterd in a way that are more disappointing than interesting. John has gun with limited ammo and superior health, and Sara can save anywhere in the game (albeit a certain number of times) and can spot hidden supplies.\nThese are different than the original game, as both had no weapons whatsoever, John had more stamina and health, and Sara had less physical strengths, but could spot clues that helped her solve puzzzles. I liked the original character abilities, where one was far more focused on solving the puzles, and the other was focused on physcial prowess.\nThat's not to say the new abilties do not enhance those concepts, but adding a gun and the ability to save anywhere basically negates the rather tense moments and the Resident Evil-esque style of backtracking to save and heal yourself.\nAll in all, this game gets a solid thumbs up from me, but a second thumbs at 90 degrees for the gripes I have. By the time you finished reading this beast of a review, I hope I didn't ruin too many surprises about this game. If the third game is released (and there were two versions: One Night 3, and One Night 3 Full Cricle), I hope Dark Gaia takes care to read the reviews of the people who played the games, and considers their input carefully.\nEDIT: As I reached the underground cave beneath the well, I found a bugt that prevents you from completing the puzzle to open the drawer which holds the next key to progression. I don't know if the recent update caused this, or it's just a one-off, but this prevents me from finishing the game altogether.\nAlso, in the cabin, when the demonic dogs spawn, I found you can just leave the room and walk all the way back to the manor without fighting them. However, they will continune to follow you throughout the backyard, until you go into the house. From what I recall in the original game, you were trapped in that room and forced to kill the monsters before you could leave. I'm not sure if the option to simply leave is intentional or not.","html":"

I played this game in nearly all versions (as well as the other games and their versions in the series) since it was released. I enjoyed the improvements it made on the combat system of the original, and the additions Dark Gaia made with the wandering enemies. The original game only had enemies appear when trying to solve (or having solved) a puzzle.

They also removed the healing basin that was present in every save room, which makes the playthroughs much harder, as you have to manage your supplies even more carefully than ever. Without the basin, I wasn't able to use my old tactic of bustin down doors and opening stuck drawers, and then retracing my steps to a basin to replenish my stamina to max again before tackling the next combat encounter.

In my opinion, nearly all the changes made to the version on Steam are welcome. Howevr, I do have two minor gripes. The original game was much darker (not in tone but lighting) than this version, and the abiltiies of the characters were alterd in a way that are more disappointing than interesting. Now it’s time for the story. Mairstone Manor on the surface it looks like any other old mansion, but this is no ordinary home its nickname is the beyond for anyone who enters there is never to return, with many mysterious deaths and disappearances have happened over the years, now it lays abandoned.\nBut sometimes people do venture not believing the rumors that it is a cursed place and these two people are no different, a Detective searching for a missing person and a horror writer trying to get inspiration. Both venture into the mansion, but what awaits them is something beyond their wildest nightmares.\nOkay then the likes, the story is very good it has a bit of a lovecraftian feel to it like the previous game, although the story feels a little more inspired by the original alone in the dark then Resident Evil. The story also does a good job in building up the mystery and the tragedy of this place with some cutscenes and collectible notes. You can also play between two different characters with changes the story a little bit especially the endings.\nThe gameplay is good it’s definitely an improvement from the first game, you still have to pick up different items and use them on certain objects, but there's also a combat system where you can fight the monsters which I enjoyed. It is pretty basic you have regular attack, strong attack that uses stamina and defense against the attack which you don't really need to use, but still the battle system was quite an improvement from the first game, the game also lets you play between two different characters.\nThe two different characters have their own unique ability, like the detective has more health and carries a gun, while the writer can spot things in hidden areas and can carry a piece of paper that allows you to save anywhere you want, it all has this resident evil/alone in the dark feel to it. The RPG Graphics are very good, its standard for RPG Maker but I feel like these were a bit more improved than the first game, making the Mansion feel a bit more alive. The levels like the first game this takes place entirely in one area, but the mansion is diverse enough with some interesting set pieces that keep it fresh.\nThe enemies and bosses in the game are really good and this game has more unique bosses then the first game which I enjoyed, even those they don’t have any special powers or anything , they do have interesting designs like the scorpion boss. The puzzles are for the most part pretty good there are a few annoying math puzzles, but for the most part the puzzles here are good and better then the first game’s puzzles with some nice diversity.\nThe notes are really good they helped with the story and how screwed up the house is, the notes even had a little bit of a call back to the first game. The music is good and it fits pretty well with this game. Now is this game scary, it can be although it's mostly because the game uses a lot and I mean uses a lot of jump scares which I don't know it could get pretty old for some people, but I didn't really mind it that much.\nOkay then the dislikes, just like the first game there isn't any achievements to get so there isn't any real incentive to want to play the game more. The game also says it has full controller support, but that's technically a lie because there was no way to exit the game except to Press F12 and also there's this bug where if you exit the game with F12 and immediately want to reload your save, the game crashes on you. Luckily it only happens when you press F12 and immediately want to get back to the game, if you press F12 then quit the game and reload it then there's no problem.\nAlright now that I've told you this, One Night 2: The Beyond not only is it a pretty good RPG Maker horror game and resident evil/alone in the dark clone, but it's also a very good sequel to the first game, with a very good story, good gameplay and really good enemies and bosses.\nSo do I recommend this game? RPG Maker strikes again!

One Night 2: The Beyond is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel JRPG ripoffs spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school fan fiction.

Like all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer.

In this case, One Night 2: The Beyond is more of a adventure/puzzle game than an RPG, and the developer has made the somewhat noble decision to make this template flip completely free, although they were a little dishonest by describing it as the sequel to the "critically acclaimed" "One Night", which is also an RPG Maker asset flip. I had a look at the review for One Night, and it's only got 17 positive Steam user reviews, all of them basically participation trophies. I wouldn't call that critically acclaimed.

Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. While this is free, and that's a pro gamer move from the developer, I can't recommend low quality RPG Maker asset flips to anyone.
