(PC)","text":"This game is a kinetic novel – it has no choices or branching paths, and instead is more about telling a story through its visuals and sound, in addition to written text. At the moment, Jiangshi x Daoshi is divided up into a prologue and two full-length volumes. I think of these as something like an “arc” – the game even divides them into chapters about the same length as a chapter in a manga. Just like with the “Big Three” heroes’ quests to become Hokage, King of the Pirates, and whatever Bleach's Ichigo’s character arc was, there’s an overarching theme narrative in Jiangshi x Daoshi’s volumes which run beneath the surface level antics. That being said, it’s a satisfying ride no matter how long the reader stays for.","html":"

This game is a kinetic novel – it has no choices or branching paths, and instead is more about telling a story through its visuals and sound, in addition to written text. At the moment, Jiangshi x Daoshi is divided up into a prologue and two full-length volumes. I think of these as something like an “arc” – the game even divides them into chapters about the same length as a chapter in a manga. Rather than relying solely on traditional static dialogue scenes, the game embraces an energetic presentation filled with animated sequences, dramatic visual effects, and comic-inspired direction that make its story feel constantly alive. The narrative follows Luan, a former assassin who narrowly escapes death after an encounter with horrifying flesh-eating creatures. Rescued by the wandering dao priest Ling Ling, he becomes entangled in a dangerous journey involving ancient legends, powerful enemies, mystical artifacts, and supernatural forces. The free base game includes the complete first two episodes of the story, providing a substantial narrative before the optional continuation in the downloadable third chapter.\nThe game's strongest feature is its presentation. Every major confrontation is delivered with a sense of scale rarely seen in visual novels, using dynamic camera angles, animated character sprites, explosive magical attacks, and stylish transitions to create the impression of watching an action anime rather than reading a text-heavy novel. Battles between dao practitioners, assassins, monsters, and immortal beings are packed with energy, while quieter scenes still benefit from expressive artwork and polished visual direction. The result is a story that rarely loses momentum, as the visual flair keeps conversations and action sequences equally engaging throughout the adventure.\nIts setting is equally compelling thanks to its deep inspiration from Chinese mythology. Instead of borrowing familiar fantasy tropes, Jiangshi x Daoshi introduces players to a world populated by hopping vampires, Taoist exorcists, mythical creatures, cursed rituals, and legendary figures that feel fresh compared to more common fantasy settings. The relationship between Luan and Ling Ling serves as the emotional center of the story, gradually developing as they face increasingly dangerous threats together. Supporting characters add humor, mystery, and conflict that enrich the narrative, while the balance between dramatic storytelling and lighthearted moments prevents the experience from becoming overly grim despite its darker themes.\nThe audiovisual quality further elevates the experience. Character illustrations are detailed and expressive, environments effectively capture both mystical beauty and unsettling horror, and the special effects surrounding supernatural abilities make every confrontation visually satisfying. Japanese voice acting gives the cast additional personality, helping emotional scenes land with greater impact, while the soundtrack reinforces both the adventurous and eerie aspects of the journey. The overall production values demonstrate considerable ambition, especially for an independent visual novel, resulting in an experience that consistently feels polished from beginning to end.\nThe story does not shy away from mature subject matter. Graphic violence, blood, disturbing imagery, strong language, references to human trafficking and sexual violence, along with fictional drug use, all contribute to the game's darker atmosphere. These themes are woven into the narrative rather than existing purely for shock value, reinforcing the dangers of the world and the constant threats faced by its characters. Because of this, Jiangshi x Daoshi is clearly intended for mature audiences who are comfortable with horror elements and emotionally intense storytelling.\nAlthough the game still requires players to enjoy reading, its dynamic pacing and creative visual presentation make that commitment worthwhile. The inclusion of two complete episodes in the free version provides excellent value, allowing newcomers to experience a lengthy and satisfying introduction before deciding whether to continue the story. While a few narrative developments occasionally prioritize spectacle over deeper character exploration, the game's confident blend of mythology, supernatural action, memorable characters, and cinematic storytelling creates a visual novel that stands apart from many of its contemporaries. It successfully delivers an exciting adventure that feels both culturally distinctive and visually ambitious, making it easy to recommend to fans of supernatural fiction and story-driven games.\nRating: 9/10","html":"
